Put on your smoking jacket and reading glasses, grab a leather-bound novel from the mahogany shelves, and flip through the dusty pages. This distinctive fragrance oil recalls the atmosphere of an historic library of yesteryear, beginning with a teakwood top note that gives way to a heart of cedar and leather. Earthy sandalwood, dark musk, and patchouli wrap up this woody scent.
Library inspires an array of possibilities for any home fragrance line, like book-themed candle collections and other gifts. This fragrance oil isn't limited to the literary--create distinguished room sprays and reed diffusers that are intriguingly upscale and perfectly on-trend.
This fragrance oil is infused with natural essential oils including cedarwood, patchouli, vetiver, elemi, and cade.
Blends well with:Vetiver, Tonka and Oud, Cedarwood Blanc, Amber and Driftwood, Mahogany Shea
Alternative branding ideas: Antique Sandalwood, Aged Books, Ancient Alexandria

We did not experience any acceleration or separation and the batter stayed very fluid for a long time. After 24 hours, there was no discoloration and the scent was mild with a nice woodsy character. There did not appear to be any sign of going into a gel phase. After 30 days the interior of the bars are slightly pink, but overall there is no significant discoloration. The scent is still mild but quite pleasant. This would be a great fragrance to try an intricate swirl design or any advanced technique that requires a light trace for an extended period of time.

I love it I was hoping it would give me a mystical feel and it does. Also I love the fact they ship so quickly when my sales start to pick up that will really be helpful.
I blend this with other oils, especially those with caramel, smoke, and/or tobacco notes, and it smells great. Never tried it on its own.
While this is a great sandalwood fragrance, and I definitely see why the newer chandlers like it, those of us who have been with Candlescience for many years now who knew the sophisticated and relaxing aroma of Antique Sandalwood would love for you to bring the original "great" back. This fragrance compares on some level, but simply doesn't have the distinct originality that Antique Sandalwood provided.
Library is one of my favorite scents ever. It is totally reminiscent of the wonderful smell of an aged book. There is definitely a hint of leather, and a beautiful musk, with a very slight sweetness. I bought a tester of it, and had to order more right away. This one is just magic, and so unique. I used it in a soy wax candle and the CT/HT is fantastic. Great job- love it!
Initially, I wasn't sure about this one but it definitely comes into it's profile as it cures. It's a cleaner/muskier scent than I anticipated, but I love it. Does great in a beeswax candle.
This FO reminds me of the smell of the upholstry of yellow taxis in NYC back in 90's :) Leathery - cologne like - dark polished wood scent. I like it very much, it is a very unique scent but unfortunately it has a weak HT when used 8% in soy candle. I am planning to increase the % because I don't want to give up on this one so soon.
This fragrance is true to its name, it really does smell like old books... which is great for some, but not all. I personally like the smokyness of it; but, it is definitely a blender. I wouldn't use it on it's own. Great cold and hot throw. Blends well with cashmere plum.
This FO is nice, but definitely not reminiscent of any library that I've been to. This is more of an after shave/ cologne, dare I say it, old man scent. Very much like when an older gentleman that's gone a bit too heavy with his perfumery passes by and you catch a whiff. A bit of a grandpa type, but comforting scent.
Amazing, definitely one of my favorite scents! Please never discontinue this one!
I started making candles as a pandemic hobby. I like experimenting with the different FO's and making some good smelling candles. It's helped keep me sane while I've been stuck at home. I got the libarary FO because it seemed different from herby, floral, fruity scents. I've almost burned through my first library candle, and I think it's just not fair to the other FO's. All I want to do is make more library candles! The smell is just mesmerizing. I can't get enough of it. It almost reminds me of new car smell, but with a little something extra. Whatever it is, it's warming, and comforting, and just makes me feel at peace. Maybe it's not for everyone, but I know I really love it. You can't find this kind of candle at a department store, it's so unique.
This is a great, masculine scent. I used it in 6046 at 10% and the scent drifted down the hallway from the room where it was being tested. When I posted on social media that I was testing it, it received more interest than I could have imagined (all women). This just might be a very good seller.
I used this fragrance in my first attempt at making the coffee and charcoal infused soap that can be found in the inspiration section of the site. I rebranded it as "The Mancave" and it is a hit! The orders are flowing in! Love this fragrance.
This is a very interesting scent. I definitely get library from it. My only complaint is that it's a light scent. My boyfriend absolutely loves this scent, and he likes that it isn't that strong. I like the scent on cold but can't smell it when lit. This would be a great candle for a guy.
Out of bottle, this FO doesn't smell all that great. However, once it's cured in a candle for a couple of weeks it smells really good. It's a very unique scent. I sell my candles in a high end salon, and this scent is everyone's favorite. I also sell it on my Etsy as a book lovers/writers candle and it gets lots of sales!
I combined this scent with Moon Lake Musk and it's amazing. Rich muskiness followed by the subtle scent of books. I didn't believe it could be done but I love it!
Okay, I suspected this wasn't going to be my jam but I wanted to try it to find out what all the hype was about. I can't describe it any other way than "Hippie Boyfriend"- if you had one of those, you know what I mean. It's not terrible, but it's definitely not something I want to smell on a regular basis. I dunno, scent is tied to memory and maybe the trauma of Nag Champa incense and listening to people talk about astrology is just something I will never get over. It is something I would have loved in college and would throw away today. On the other hand, it has good HT after three days with 80% 464 20% Coco Wax so if you are looking for something that smells like a 23-year-old's tapestry-covered studio apartment, this is the scent for you.
Great scent for my "Gamer" line. I renamed it Wizards Study. Sells well for me .
I made this candle for my son's reading teacher. Without even telling him the name of the candle, he said "it's smells just like a library...let's give her this one." So I think the name and scent is just perfect!!
I initially stated this wasn't a strong scent. While I am waiting for the candle to cure, I did take a sniff and it is much stronger today.
Might end up with five stars once I test it! 🤦
Not sure what to think. my nose is normally pretty sensitive and I am not noticing much of a scent. I opened the bottle and expected something since it sounds amazing, but I just am not feeling it.
I am hoping the candles I am testing will throw a good scent, but I felt like I would need the whole bottle for even the smallest of candles.
Will see how the first one is this weekend.
I get dark lacquered wood, some vanilla dust/paper vibes and a hint of strange green floral note (possibly citrus) that goes away and leaves what really does smell like a library to me. It's not as much paper as I was hoping, but my family adores this one and actively requests soap made with this. I really need to find a book shaped mold for it. Huge hit.
I bought this thinking it could be a masculine smelling candle. But it just does NOT have a hot throw like my other candles do. You can't smell it even in small bathroom. My other scents i buy from candle science...fill up a whole house with the candles hot throw. Not this one.
Does this smell like walking in to your local public library or a used book store, no. Does it echo the pages of a well worn book with perhaps a bit of leather mixed in, yes. It's more sandalwood, pachouli, and musk than anything else. OOB it's a bit harsh, when blended with earthy tonka and oud or smokey fireside it blends quite nicely. Give it a shot, just don't expect "Harry Potter Library" or "City of Dreaming Books" out of this FO.
I cannot recommend this one enough. It really does smell an old, used, leathery book but I mean that in the best way possible.
The scent performs very well and has a good HT in my soy candles, but it smells more like a cologne or aftershave than what I think of when I think "library".
I used this FO to make a candle for my sister for Christmas and it was a hit. Several people in my family noted how great this candle smelled. The cold throw and the hot throw are both amazing. I'm considering incorporating this in future candle lines now!
This is more of a masculine scent. It smells like a room with old leather bound vintage books. I figured it would appeal more to a specific customer but as it turns out, its one of my better sellers. Its has amazing cold and hot throw with soy 464 and my customers love it.
So I was so excited to get this scent because I was hopeful of it being close to the smell of old books or an old library. I did not get that at all. It smelled mildly like earl grey tea, which isn't a bad smell but it isn't what I imagined for this fragrance. It did smell a tad musty as well. I'm hoping to return but I just wanted to caution anyone who purchases this.
It grew on me. It's masculine, smoky and subtle. I don't dislike it, but I didn't particularly like it at first. It's a good fall scent I think, or good for an office/study. It's a good rainy day scent, if that makes sense!
One of our bestsellers. We blend Library with Suede & Smoke. Essence of an old library.
This has quickly become one of my best sellers and customers keep coming back for more!
I personally love this one. Masculine, leathery, and woodsy but not overwhelming. I mixed in a small portion of coconut + woods. It is just right and I can't stop smelling it! I have yet to market it so I hope it's as popular as I expect it to be.
Smells just like a public library! I was looking for a book smell but this wasn't it. Definitely smells like a library but not the actual books if that makes sense.
the fragrance is already cute. I am starting to make candles and I do not know how to mix the essences could help me mix library Thanks
Hi! A member of our team will be reaching out shortly!
This is honestly a 10/10.
I'm really confused why this scent is called library because it doesn't resemble anything like I would expect a library to. If you're looking for a leathery, parchment, book-type scent, then this is most definitely not for you. This has a piercing scent of..cologne..aftershave? I honestly think it smells like an ant spray I've used in the past. In any case it's not horrible like others have mentioned, but it's not something I would remotely attribute to anything book or library related. I would caution buying this in any size other than a trial if you haven't smelled it yet. Thankfully this was my free sample, and I won't be purchasing it again.
Absolutely LOVE this scent. First off, I am a citrus agave, red currant, white currant, kind of gal..... This one (and suede and smoke) are my new favs. Truly, the first thing I think of when I wake up - I know, it is a sign of addiction - my point exactly! Does it smell like white paper and old leather, yes! Do my clients love this, yes! Have the ordered repeatedly, yes!
i always love books and i was anxious about the reviews but still went for a sample. and oh man!! i love it. it does smell like books. at least for me! i even asked my boyfriend who doesn't like reading books and he said he def smelled books in this FO! ordering 16oz now!!
Have you ever seen fishermen on TV who catch and release. Well that is what you have here. As soon as you catch the scent you definitely want to throw it back as soon as possible. I am not sure what library they found this in but I would pull the fire alarm immediately to save the books from their misery. In other words I would not buy this scent again.
I thought I'd love this scent, but I don't. It just smells like an old man. I'm having to mix it with something to give it life. I know tons of other people love it, but it's not for me.
Nothing like a library, still smells really good like a cologne you'd smell walking into a mall store I'd definitely recommend getting a tester oz
I was really hoping this scent would capture that old wood, old leather bound books smell. You know, that scent you get when you open an antique book in an old home. I am so disappointed that this is not even close. It smells like my old uncle Don's aftershave in the 70's. I love a good masculine cologne scent, but this is just old man. I made a 3 wick test candle to see if it smelled better in the finished product. It doesn't, it smells the same & I could never use this scent. It just smells bad to me. If you like an old fashioned aftershave smell, then you would really like this one. I still have the test candle. I tried to give it away, but no one liked it. I really like other CS fragrances, but this gets a huge NO from me.
This sounded like something I would love, but when it arrived, I was VERY disappointed. Fast forward to my (growing) collection of fragrances that aren't my favorite and I decided to blend it with another. It works GREAT when blended with something more fragrant and bold. I'd say play around with mixing this with other scents and you may be surprised at how well this works. May also work well alone for customers that enjoy a deeper fragrance.
This encompasses exactly what I wanted to my candle to smell. I highly recommend, super masculine smell. It smells like a clean man that is reads the most interesting books in the world
Not only is this scent beautiful and inspired but it actually is a FANTASTIC fragrance to mix. It helps to balance what could be too sharp, too aggressive. It's a blessing. Seriously!
I was a little unsure at first but cannot stop smelling it! I used it as a Father's Day fragrance in amber jars and it was perfect. To me it was a little Smokey. Think old historic library with a man sitting in a leather chair drinking whiskey; that's the vibe I get. One of my customers is obsessed and stopped buying her Jo Malone candles for this scent 🙌
I love the scent but I was expecting something a little more on the powder side for some reason. It is very earthy, and has a strong smoke type scent. Great now the less and works great in our scent called bookworm
I gave Library 2 stars because although it behaved very well in my CP soap (swirl design), there is minimal fragrance. Out of the bottle I noticed the unusual fragrance mentioned by other reviewers, but it was weak. I was hoping that once I cut the soap the fragrance would be stronger, but all I can pick up is a slight hint of leather scent. Next batch I'll try mixing Library with Sandalwood to see if I like it better, and to use up the 8 oz bottle, but probably will not purchase again.
this is a very unique, masculine smell...musk-y, tobacco, wood, sort of a sharp musty smell. You either hate it or like it! I've branded it as a sort of forgotten library/bookworm fragrance in CP soap. I think it would work well as a beard oil or something similar.
First, let me say that I don't usually do product reviews for various reasons, but in this case I just could not pass it up. I took a chance on ordering this scent for cold process soap making. It performs amazing in cold process soap making, but the smell is super amazing! So amazing that as soon as I made the first batch of soap and smelled that wonderful fragrance coming from my soap, I turned around and ordered a large quantity because it's a scent I NEVER want to run out of. If you haven't tried it, you MUST do it as this is a MUST have scent!!!!
They are incredibly fast shippers, but dissapointed that this scent doesn't smell at all like any library I've ever been to.
I love this!! I tend to like odd scents. It really reminds me of a old book.
Well, I didn't actually expect the smell of old books, since it's a very hard scent to get right, but this is lovely. Maybe it's the mood of old books or the emotion of books that I get from this. It's a dry, almost bitter vanilla with dark notes, wood lacquer, some extremely faint dusty spice...it's lovely. There's a smooth, deep feeling to this that is really nice. I adore it and I know my sister will too. I don't find it masculine, though it is woody so maybe that's what people think of as masculine. It has no perfume, floral or sweetness to it and the vanillic aspects aren't edible. It smells like the idea of a library. Well done, CandleScience!
Very different but give five stars unique
I absolutely love this fragrance! I use it for my fiance's soap and beard oil an can't get enough of it.
This has a very pleasing masculine scent. It's my favorite scent so far!
This scent smells sooo good! I was looking for a scent that had masculine notes to it and I lucked up. I will be purchasing more of this soon.
My 13 year old son loved this, it has a masculine scent to it and is amazing! I sold out right away!
I made a batch of candles with the Library scent alone....at first; it smelled almost perfumy. I added some Cinnamon Vanilla and Cedarwood Vanilla scents to it and bam, it smells amazing. Next time I'll be adding some Leather scent.
I ordered a sample of Library when curiosity got the better of me. To me it doesn't smell like anything in the reviews, it smells like flea shampoo. I probably won't use this one.
I ordered this as a sample and when I first smelled it, I set it aside. My sister found it in my storage and asked me to pour it for her. I did, and I still didn't really like it. However, after her rave reviews of it, I decided to give it a try and burn it. OH MY GOSH! I absolutely love it!!! Every person who smells it burning is obsessed. One of my top sellers!
I love this scent, but also miss Antique Sandalwood! I made a scent that included both Antique Sandalwood and Library, and it was a best seller!
Ok, so I was completely apprehensive about this scent because of the reviews, but I bought an 8 oz bottle and went for it anyway because I had a feeling people would connect with it. Boy, was I right! This is the only scent Ive sold out of among all my other "best sellers." We also might have landed a partnership with a local bookstore who said they've smelled several "library" scents, but they finally found one they like and could put on their shelves. Thank you CS!
Sadly, this scent did not remind me of an old book store. It smells like old man cologne. I am hoping to mix it with a few other fragrances to try and create the effect I'm searching for. Thankfully I purchased this during the sample sale so I am not out the full price if it doesn't end up working out.
I love this scent. It reminds me of a cozy library full of books, as it should. I never tried the Antique Sandalwood fragrance, so I can't really say if it's identical like the other reviewers, but I do know that I love this scent! It's the most popular fragrance of my autumn collection.
Previously called Antique Sandalwood, I love this Library fragrance! Has a strong throw in soy and can be used stand alone or mixed with other scents. One of my go-tos.
Library is an interesting scent with notes of an old home or basement. I was getting faint notes of cologne as well; possibly the patchouli element. I couldn't help but think of my Granny's old house when I smelled it! Not particularly pleasing on its own, but adds an interesting dimension when blended with other earthy scents. I would definitely recommend it as a blender, but the jury is still out on whether I like it enough to purchase again.
Library is one of my new favorite scents. Great hot and cold throw in soy.
So sad that I don't see more positive reviews for this FO. I do agree that it smells similar to Antique Sandalwood, however I feel like Library has more of that old book fragrance I've been searching for - especially when combined with a leather FO. I think Library is a great FO to mix with many other scents to add more depth and dimension. Will continue to order this one!
Antique Sandalwood was a personal favorite of mine as well as a top selling scent for my business. This rendition smells very close but is really lacking in hot and cold throw. I'm so sad to have to discontinue this scent from our line :(
this really does smell like an old library with dusty books haha, sounds gross but very realistic. It also has a hint of clean. I've made the perfect mixture with this scent. My customers L-O-V-EE !! will buy again
Couldn't put my finger on it until I came back and read the reviews. It smells like grandpas after shave on the weak side. I am not a fan and glad I only ordered the 1 ounce.... My husband liked it but I didn't order a small amount first to see if you truly like it.
I made a video review that featured this scent and said that it reminded me of an old musty basement. But yesterday it hit me, it smells like old guy aftershave. It's not an awful scent but also not a great one. This scent would hit a very niche market it at all. Not one I will be buying again.
We're huge fans of Antique Sandalwood and while this FO smells similar, it's really weak and lacks the richness the original had.
I will update my review after actually using this scent, but I couldn't help commenting now: for those who think this smells just like Antique Sandalwood, there's a reason! It is the newly formulated Antique Sandalwood, renamed. Makes sense now, right? I guess they did a good job with the formulation!
I was quite looking forward to this scent, however, it smells like a grandpa. Mixing it with other scents has not helped at all. I do not recommend this one.
Yes it smells exactly like antique sandalwood, it has a great cold throw but unfortunately im not getting a hot throw at all from this fragrance!
This scent is identical to Antique Sandalwood. My daughter and I conducted an experiment where we covered the names on the bottles and did a smell test and we could NOT make the distinction between the two. It's a good thing I'm a huge fan of Antique Sandalwood.
Absolutely adore this fragrance! I'm an avid reader and miss actual books (vs tablet reading), the smell of their pages.... or the smell of walking into a bookstore and getting that cozy, about-to-find-a-great-book feel... this fragrance certainly evokes all of that. Perfection!
First let me start by saying that I love Candlescience and almost every single fragrance from them. I'm a book lover so I was excited when I found about this oil. To my disappointment, it smells almost identical to CS Antique Sandalwood but with a hint of cologne. Its musty and old. But not old books.
A few companies have attempted a library books fragrance; this is a really good one, in my opinion. It smells very much like the pages of a genuine old, musty library book, and maybe a hint of something cologne-like (as is a CS custom to sneak in that little cologne element to everything). This one, unlike others I've experienced in the past, is a stronger version. If you like Antique Sandalwood, you would most likely enjoy this fragrance. Conversely, if you detest Antique Sandalwood, you may not appreciate this fragrance.
