How to Change A Gmail Address by Yourself

Let's use an example to understand how this all works. Let's say your Google account ID is "A@gmail.com."

"But I thought that was my Gmail address?"

Yes, it's your Google account ID and your Gmail address!

So, when you sign into your different Google apps (Gmail, Google Drive, Contacts, Calendars, etc), you will sign in as "A@gmail.com "

This means that all of your information related to all of your different Google Apps is tied to your Google account ID A@gmail.com, too.

Now that you understand that, you might be wondering "so how do I figure out how to change my gmail address / Google account ID?"

When people say "I want to change my gmail address," they usually mean "I want to change my Gmail address, but keep all of my Google account data too."

"I don't want to be A@gmail.com anymore! I want to be Z@gmail.com but keep all of my emails, contacts, drive files, calendars, and more from A@gmail.com!"

How to Change A Gmail Address Option 1

Username Change

"I want to learn how to change my gmail address so that people can see my new display username when I send an email."

Example: Switching the name John <A@gmail.com> to read Jonathan <A@gmail.com>.

Option 1 will guide you on how to change a username that is displayed in the 'sent' field.

How to change your Gmail address username:

1. Sign in to your Gmail account.
2. Go to Change your Gmail username.
3. In the top right, click Settings gear icon.
4. In the "Send mail as" section, click edit info.
5. Add the name you want to show when you send messages.
6. At the bottom click Save Changes.

How to Change A Gmail Address Option 2

'Sending mail as' change

"I want to learn how to change my gmail address so that I can send mail as another email address from my first account."

Example: I want to be able to sign into my Gmail account: A@gmail.com, but send mail as Z@gmail.com from A@gmail.com.

Option 2 will guide you on how to be able to send mail as another account, but you will not be able to receive Z@gmail.com's emails in A@gmail.com.

To be very clear, this option only lets you send mail as another account, you will not be able to receive emails that the second account gets (or use data from your first account when signed into the second account).

How to change your Gmail address to send mail as another Gmail ID:

1. Create a new Gmail account. (Your equivalent for Z@gmail.com.)
2. Sign into your first Gmail account. (Your equivalent for A@gmail.com.)
3. Go to Change your Gmail username.
4. In the top right, click Settings gear icon
5. Click the Accounts and Import tab.
6. In the "Send mail as" section, click Add another email address.
7. Add the name you want to show and the new email address you've created.
8. Click send verification to the second account.
9. Sign into the second Gmail account.
10. Click the verification email link to verify your email or enter the confirmation code.
11. Once confirmed, go back to the Accounts and Import tab.
12. You can select if you'd like to "Reply from the same address the message was sent to" or make your second account the default.

How to Change A Gmail Address Option 3

Google Account ID change

"I don't want to be A@gmail.com anymore! I want to be Z@gmail.com but keep all of my emails, contacts, drive files, calendars, and more from A@gmail.com!"

Example: I just want to be able to switch my A@gmail.com to Z@gmail.com and not lose any information like Contacts, Drive files, Calendars, organization, labels, etc.

To do this, no matter what, you need to:

1. Create a new google account (example: Z@gmail.com).
2. Then copy everything from A@gmail.com to Z@gmail.com.

Manual Option

1. Create a new Gmail account. (Your equivalent for Z@gmail.com.)
2. Sign into your first Google account.
3. Go to Google Takeout.
4. Export the data from the apps you would like to import into your second Gmail account.
5. Wait for your Google Takeout archive link to be sent to you (could takes hours, possibly days depending on amount of data).
6. Download your Google Takeout archive.

Since this process can take a while for each Google app, below are step-by-step instructions for importing your emails and contacts only.

Importing Gmail Emails into second account

In order to back up Gmail and use it, you'll need to go back to your Google Takeout folder on your desktop, you'll want to open your Mail subfolder.

You'll notice that all of your mail from your old account has been compressed into an .mbox file. That's your Gmail backup.

In order access the information inside your .mbox Gmail backup, you will need the help of a common third party application called Thunderbird.

Set up your new Google account with Thunderbird:

1. Download and Install Thunderbird: Mozilla Thunderbird
2. Open Thunderbird and go to the top, selecting File → New → Get a New Mail Account.
3. Click Skip this and use my existing email
4. Enter your information for your new Google account in the given fields and click Continue
5. Select IMAP and then click Done

Your new Google mail account will appear on the left.

Next, instal Thunderbird's "ImportExportTools" Add-On.

1. First, download the "ImportExportTools" add-on for Thunderbird here: ImportExportTools
2. Click Download Now
3. Save ImportExportTools.xpi file to your Desktop
4. Open Thunderbird and at the top go to Tools and select Add-Ons.
5. Click the Settings icon and then select Install Add-on From File.

   

6. Navigate to your Desktop and select the ImportExportTools.xpi file.
7. Click Install Now.
8. Restart Thunderbird.

Import your MBOX files:

1. In Thunderbird, on the left, right click Local Folders → highlight ImportExportTools → select Import mbox file.

   

2. Select Import directly one or more mbox files and click Ok
3. Navigate to and select your .mbox file in your Google Takeout export folder.
4. Your emails will start importing and they will be located under your Local Folders. (Give it time, because it may take a while.)

Lastly, move your newly imported Labels into your new Google mail account on the left:

1. In Thunderbird, expand Local Folders on the left.
2. Select the folder that was your previous .mbox file that you imported.
3. Select and right click all of the emails.
4. Highlight your new Gmail account and select the folder you want to import these email into.

Awesome! You're done importing your Gmail emails!

How to Change Gmail Address - Import Google Contacts

To import your contacts, simply:

1. Sign in to your second Gmail address.
2. Go to https://contacts.google.com
3. Click the dropdown menu More on the left panel.
4. Click Import
5. Select CSV or vCard file.
6. Select Go To Old Version.
7. Click Import Contacts.
8. Navigate to your Google Takeout archive folder and select the subfolder Contacts.
9. Choose each .vcf file that you want imported into your second account.
10. Click Import.

Congratulations, your Contacts are imported!
